The 2017Southeastern Meter School and Conference will be held March 20 – 23 at the Hotel at Auburn University in Auburn, Alabama. The school is sponsored by the Southeastern Meter Technical Association. It is held in cooperation with Utility Technology Association.

The school provides a forum for electric utility meter personnel to discuss metering practices, procedures, new technologies, and common problems with peers and representatives from industry. The school is open to anyone interested and involved in these areas. This years’ school will be another outstanding educational event. Great training and hands on learning opportunities are provided in each of five modules. The modules are tailored to instruct utility professionals at all levels of experience. Attend any class from any module. You pick the class of interest.

The Hotel at Auburn University is situated in a charming university campus environment within easy walking distance to many shops and restaurants in the quaint, historical downtown Auburn, Alabama. The Exhibit Hall will be open Monday, March 20th through Wednesday, March 22nd. Exhibitors wishing to display their products must register for a booth.  Breaks and evening hospitality will be held in the Exhibit Hall.  The cost of the registration includes one table with electric service, free wireless Internet access, two lunches, annual dinner, pre and post electronic participant list, and conference schedule for one individual. A company can purchase a pass for additional exhibitors and additional exhibit tables. Exhibitors need to obtain registration information from the school website.

Module 100 Fundamental Metering

Module providing instruction in basic metering theory and application. This module will include topics of single and polyphase theory, instrument transformers, meter sockets, and meter form numbers.

Module 200 Advanced Metering

Module on intermediate metering theory and polyphase meter installation. Topics include polyphase applications, reactive metering, troubleshooting with phasors, and pulse metering.

Module 300  Hands On Meter Testing & Safety

Module providing both lecture and laboratory experiences on all aspects of meter testing. Session will include hands on experience in testing everything from simple single phase, polyphase and demand to multifunction meters.

Module 400 Smart Grid, AMI & Emerging Technology

The 2016 Southeastern Distribution Apparatus School and Conference is sponsored by Utility Technology Education.

This years’ school will truly be an outstanding educational opportunity for all who attend.  Great training and hands on learning opportunities are provided from a variety of educational sessions.

This conference is divided into four modules to better provide instruction for utility professionals at all levels of experience. Attend any class from the four different modules. The courses are designed for participants to select topics they require or have an interest in. Classes range from Fundamentals of Distribution System Apparatus for the beginning substation or apparatus technician to SCADA, Communication and Smart Grid applications for the more advanced technician, engineer or manager.

Four Modules to Choose Classes From

 

Module 100: Fundamentals of Distribution System Apparatus

This module provides instruction in basic distribution apparatus theory and application.  Students will learn electrical fundamentals and power theory along with how the equipment works. This session should be attended by those who need to gain a better understanding of the components in an electrical distribution system. This module will help the student establish a good foundation for future classes.

Module 200: Principles & Applications of Distribution System Apparatus

This module provides a more in-depth look of the individual distribution apparatus equipment used in the substation and on the distribution feeders.  The sessions will emphasis why the equipment is used and how the equipment functions. Distribution equipment included in sessions will be regulators, breakers, transformers, capacitors, arresters, and reclosers along with classes on the insulating mediums used.

Module 300: SCADA and Communications

This module provides instruction on the principles of a SCADA system used for the monitoring and control of an electrical distribution system. Module covers RTUs, IEDs, and Integrated Communication methods. Includes sessions on Data Mining, DNP3 Deep Dive and Managing IoT Cellular Devices Securely.

Module 400: Engineering Topics and Emerging Technology

This module will examine the initiatives and engineering applications of electric utilities.  Session topics will include Voltage Reduction Applications, Cable Diagnostics, Symmetrical Components, Electric Vehicle Charging Impacts, PV Integration, Weather Analytics & GIS Tools, Connected Communities and Distributed Energy Resources (DER). Also will be an in-depth discussion on Power Quality impact of the electrical distribution system.

What Was Old Is New Again – Hendrix Aerial Cable Systems

Hendrix Aerial Cable Systems has been in business since 1951.  Their proven overhead cable system continues to thrive and grow sixty-five years later. Hendrix ACS is a viable alternative for 15KV to 69KV overhead covered conductor installations where reliability is a concern.  Hendrix ACS has been used in many applications for substation exits, underbuilds, long spans and environmentally sensitive areas like coastal or heavily wooded installations.

Substation exits is the fasting grow sector of business for Hendrix ACS.  This is due to continued space constraints in substations, but more importantly because the cost of using spacer cable is so much more economical than using underground cable. It gives you more reliability against wild life outages since the conductor is covered all the way to the bus, unlike bare conductor.

Storm Hardening is becoming more prevalent for utilities.  Hendrix ACS has been a part of these storm hardening initiatives because of their great track record of reliability.

As trimming trees becomes more and more of an issue for utilities due to customer/community involvement, Hendrix ACS is a win/win for the utility and their customers.  This allows the utility to save hundreds of thousands of dollars on tree trimming while providing a reliable powerline at the same time.

Hendrix ACS also has led the way in customer service and engineering for their customers.  Hendrix ACS will help engineer and design the installation alongside the customer and will see it through to the project end.  Hendrix ACS has also developed Apps like FieldCom and FieldEng to help customers receive even faster engineering support.  These Apps can help reduce the time of circuit design and proposal to as little as three weeks.

Hendrix ACS installations also allow you to save more money on installation time as well as material cost.  Hendrix ACS can help you design your project so you will only buy your custom lengths of cable and not a set length amount of cable like most industry standards.

Utility Specialists, Incorporated is pleased to announce the hiring of Kevin Rising for our South Florida Territory. Kevin will be calling on and promoting our products at Florida Power & Light, NextEra and the Cooperatives and Municipals in South Florida.

Kevin comes to USI most recently from an outside sales position in the Automotive parts world. Kevin is a graduate of Radford University in Virginia and has operations and sales experience.

Kevin moved from Pennsylvania to Florida in 2003 and he and his wife Gina and daughter Aviella live in Boynton Beach where he will be working from his home office.
